We say no to the far right: No European ICE

Whether we’re born in Europe or moved here to escape war or to build a better life for our families, we would all do everything to keep our loved ones safe.

But right wing fear mongers are scapegoating people who are working hard to contribute to our society or are seeking safety for them and their families. They spread fear and sow division to distract from the true struggles we all face. 

The far right is now taking a next step and wants to introduce ICE-style deportations in Europe, including locking children up and transferring people to camps outside of Europe.

To them what is happening in the US is a goal instead of a nightmare.

And the worst thing about it: The Christian Democrat EPP Group in the European Parliament got caught in secret Whatsapp groups – collaborating with the far right to achieve this. Also MEPs from other political groups seem to be ok with this.

We need to call them out to stop this. No European Union ICE.

We know that the majority of Europeans don’t want this to happen. In Europe, we protect people’s rights no matter where they come from. We Europeans care for each other. We build a community together, we cherish our hard-won freedoms, we all contribute to society.

It is time for the silent majority to speak out. Tell Members of the European Parliament not to proceed with their unholy alliance of hatred and division with the Trump-loving far right.

On Thursday 26 March, the European Parliament will vote on the EU Return Regulation, which includes highly problematic provisions including the possible obligation to leave an EU Member State immediately (deportation), lifetime entry bans and detention for an indefinite period without serious legal grounds, return hubs including for families with children, administrative detention of children, severe sanctions in cases of so-called non-cooperation, weakening of procedural rights, etc. A big step away from a fair, humane and efficient migration system that we are calling for.

The German news agency DPA uncovered that EPP officials have secretly been coordinating amendments on this legislation in Whatsapp groups and meetings with far right MEPs from ECR, PfE and ESN. EPP Group leader Manfred Weber always denied that this coordination was taking place.
