No poisonous chemicals in our cosmetics

No matter what we look like or where we come from, we all care for our health and for that of the ones we love. This is why we want our cosmetics to be safe and toxic free.

However, the European Commission is proposing to relax the rules and wants to allow poisonous chemicals back into our cosmetics. Of course it is the wealthy corporations pushing for this, so they can make more money.

The Commission’s proposal would allow brands to use chemicals which are carcinogenic and harmful for reproduction (so-called CMRs) in products like lipstick, perfumes, sunscreen if they can prove that they are not dangerous through the skin.

But we all know that this is ridiculous: Perfumes are inhaled. Sprays linger in the air. Lipsticks and lip balms are ingested every single day. Children put everything in their mouths.

Pregnant women use almost twenty cosmetic products daily. Allowing inhalation or ingestion of toxic chemicals in cosmetics is not simplification. It is deregulation at the expense of human health.

Our message is simple: No poisonous chemicals in our cosmetics.

This is where you come in. The louder we voice our opposition to this proposal, the harder it will be for Members of the European Parliament to silently accept it.

As the Greens/EFA we managed to ban these chemicals in cosmetics 16 years ago. We are not allowing them back in.

CMR substances are chemicals that are carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic. The acronym “CMR” means that these substances can cause cancer (carcinogenic), damage genetic material (mutagenic) or harm reproduction and fetal development (reprotoxic).
