Don't do it, Manfred!

Call on EPP leader Manfred Weber not to collaborate with the far right to dismantle child labour prevention and nature protection.

No matter where you are from, we all agree that child labour or destruction of nature has no place in the stuff that you buy. Last year, with the support of many Europeans, we were able to adopt one of the most important environmental and human rights laws that make big companies responsible for their production process.

However, under the disguise of simplification, Manfred Weber, the leader of the Christian Democratic EPP group in the European Parliament, is now trying to reverse those wins. And even worse: he is willing to work with the extreme right to accomplish that.

What is the European due diligence legislation?

The taxonomy, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) form a legislative framework which requires companies to report on their environmental footprint and hold them accountable for environmental and human rights violations in their value chains.

This model supports and rewards frontrunners who care for the planet and the people and gives them an advantage towards others that do not. At the same time, it is a safeguard against companies which deliberately exploit workers and ecological resources.

The proposed deregulation would:

• remove legal options for victims of corporate environmental or social crimes to seek reparation
• weaken the climate transition plans as companies will no longer have the obligation to put it into effect anymore
• limit involvement of civil society and trade unions
