For people and the planet, the EU must say no to the Mercosur Deal

Over the past years the Amazon rainforest and other valuable ecosystems have been decreasing in size due to the expansion of intensive agriculture and forest exploitation. Agribusinesses continue to seek and exploit parts of the Amazon to ranch their cattle, grow soy or for illegal logging.

At the same time, the Brazilian Congress - dominated by Bolsonaristas and ruralistas - are tabling bill after bill allowing agribusiness to expand to indigenous territories.

These trends will only be worsened by the proposed EU-Mercosur trade deal.

The deal will also bring social woes to the EU. Farmers rightly worry that this deal will expose them to unfair competition, against products that do not respect the same sanitary and environmental standards. The deal is also set to destroy jobs in many sectors.

For people and the planet, the EU must say no to the EU-Mercosur Trade Agreement as it stands.

The EU must stop pursuing this trade agreement that would increase deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, increase the use of pesticides and jeopardize social rights. We need to renegotiate the deal. The Paris Agreement and the Convention on Biological diversity objectives must have precedence over trade liberalisation provisions throughout the agreement.

Despite its proven severe impacts on social rights and the planet, many European politicians want this deal!

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, must hear our thoughts about the deal, please help us flag our concerns with her. We have already prepared an email for you.
