We all want our farmers - the people who feed us - to earn a good income. And we want to protect nature from destruction, both in South-America and in Europe.

This trade agreement with the Mercosur region puts both at risk, all to benefit the trade interests of big corporations exploiting vulnerable nature to raise cattle, grow soy or for illegal logging. It would mean unfair competition to our struggling farmers.

But they say the EU-Mercosur trade deal is good for the economy?

Who is “the economy”? In this trade deal, that would be mainly big corporations, but it is an illusion to think that their profits would trickle down to farmers or citizens. At this moment, we need to support family farming and regional businesses. This is way more beneficial to an economy that benefits workers than helping multinationals lower social standards across the globe.

But they say it brings stability in the world?

With unreliable autocrats in power in the United States and in Russia, we need to build solid international relationships that raise social and environmental standards. We should not compete in a race to the bottom.

There are other ways of strengthening partnerships and cooperation with the Mercosur region than this toxic free trade agreement. Trade agreements can work only if they are fair for planet and people and only if they do not strengthen other dubious leaders like Argentina’s Javier Milei. We can’t accept giving free reign to big corporations to ignore the protection of consumers and producers.
