Nature protection: A European success story
🌼Everybody loves nature. From a small patch of green close to our homes, to big impressive nature protected areas in National Parks. 🌼
We need nature to unwind, to clear our heads after a busy work week, to let our children get rid of their excess energy. But nature does more than just offer us a breath of fresh air: it plays a vital role in the health of our planet and our economy.
There are forces falsely claiming that nature protection is obstructing our economy, instead of supporting it. We can’t let misinformation undo decades of progress. That is why we need to remind ourselves how important this is.
We need nature to protect us from extreme weather events due to climate change. And our economy depends on it: all over Europe, millions of people are working in jobs linked to nature: in tourism, in conservation and in food production.
💪 In Europe we have a long history of groups standing up for nature, protecting valuable areas for future generations.

Over the past thirty years, the European Union also played a big part, with strong regulations protecting nature and wildlife. The Bird and Habitats directives are two of the most successful European laws we have, setting up the Natura 2000 network of nature protected areas.
Did you know there are more than 27,000 protected Natura 2000 sites and that it covers almost 18% of land in the European Union? And that 6 in 10 Europeans live within 5 km of a Natura 2000 site?
