Where is Europe's Climate Commissioner Frans Timmermans? For weeks, we have heard nothing from him or the European Commission about new climate targets and measures. Yet, time is pressing. We have just experienced Europe’s driest summer for 500 years. While rich countries keep on polluting, poor countries face the dire consequences. Take Pakistan: it is still suffering massively from the worst floods the country has ever seen.
World leaders and negotiators are in Sharm el-Sheik for the COP27 Climate Summit. We will be there with a delegation of Greens/EFA MEPs to follow negotiations and to push the European Commission to take more action.
We call on Climate Commissioner Frans Timmermans
to raise emission reduction targets to at least 65 per cent by 2030
to take on the responsibility for losses and damages in developing countries caused by the climate crisis and
to end fossil fuel subsidies.
Otherwise, we are in danger of breaking the Paris Climate Agreement!
This is what has (not) happened so far:
The last climate conference ended with the Glasgow Climate Pact, which renewed commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement. Since then, the EU Commission has not adjusted its climate targets and measures sufficiently, and has not yet presented a plan for ending fossil fuel subsidies. This is catastrophic. Every year, we pump 137 billion euros into subsidies for coal, oil and gas. This fossil fuel budget continues to fuel the climate crisis.
In the wake of Putin's war of aggression, the EU Commission has presented its REPowerEU plan, which sets out how we can become independent of Russia's natural gas. That is good, but it is born out of necessity. Instead of simply reacting, the EU should be leading the charge for climate action with long term climate strategy. We need solidarity on climate targets, measures and financing.
So far our climate pledges are breaking with the Paris Climate Agreement. Right now, we are well above the critical 2-degree climate target. This has got to change.
Our climate targets must be raised. A new catalogue of climate measures must be put on the table. We need to accept the liability for losses and damages in developing countries caused by climate change. The end of fossil fuel subsidies must be enshrined in law once and for all.
We are in danger of breaking the Paris Climate Agreement! I call upon you to raise our emission reduction targets, to take on the responsibility for losses and damages and to end fossil fuel subsidies.
